MHR collects and provides Storage and Archival service, for all records entrusted to their care. A Custodian is appointed, all services being provided by volunteers at this time.

Formative Events

1997 Formed as a support group (13 founding members) on a Shire-wide base, to update and continue the Shire of Murrindindi Historical Survey, 1995.
2000 + Instituted the annual Dusty Swag Bush Poems & Yarns Competition
2000 + Sponsor the annual Heritage Week featuring window displays (March 1-7) — see display maintained at 45a Grant St, Alexandra — and a leading heritage-oriented Event.
2001 Incorporated for grant applications re acquisition of microfilms of local newspapers, training workshops, and to establish the Murrindindi Historic Register (MHR) Survey Database.
2001 + Published The Timber Worker (2001) and Dusty Swag Awards (2003)
2004 - 2006 Commissioned and published the history of Alexandra Shire to 2005, incorporating The Red Gate by G.W.Noble 1968. Released as Alexandra and District on 5 March 2006, all 500 copies sold within 3 months.
2007 Launched web site to make collection and services more widely available.
2010 Renovated Dove Cottage and so gained permanent premises for the first time.

All persons over 18 years, with family or other interests in the old townships of the Murrindindi Shire are welcomed. Just email or post the Membership Form to any of our contacts.

Objectives

  1. To amend, add to and revise the 1995 Historical Survey of the Shire of Murrindindi, and to issue a Second Edition thereof.
  2. To involve all area and citizens of the Shire in the project, by surveys, workshops, speakers, tour guiding, promotions of heritage values and publications.
  3. To invite affiliation from historical societies, museums, libraries, visitor centres, businesses and persons in support of these Objects.
  4. To collect and copy out-of-print books and publications, original manuscripts, photographs, oral tapes interviews and newspaper articles.
  5. To compile an Historical Records data text base, as a master index for reference purposes to future generations.
  6. To collect and maintain surveys materials on events, buildings and landmarks, pioneers and families for future editions of the Register.
  7. To investigate and select computer programs, filming and storage systems, to maintain the Register.
  8. To hold training workshops, volunteer working groups, and promote community involvement and support.
  9. To apply for grants and donations in cash or kind towards the cost of these activities and Objects.
  10. To engage in activities in furtherance of these Objects, including deposits, trust investments, and as approved by the Registrar of Associations (Victoria).
