Competition - on Theme "Nature at
Risk" The Murrindindi Dusty Swag Awards were established in 2000 by Paul Bannan of Yea. The name of the Awards comes from a poem by Paul titled "The Dusty Swag". Murrindindi is a shire in North Eastern Victoria, which includes the towns of Eildon, Yea and Alexandra. The Awards are designed to encourage the writing of bush poetry and stories, with an Open Section and a Schools' Section. The Open Section is for any age with an entry fee of $5 per poem or story. The topic of the entry may be of the writer’s choosing or in line with the theme chosen for the current year. Prizes are awarded in cash for the best entries as determined by a panel of judges, value based on the number of entries received and sponsorships obtained. The Schools' Section comprises four subsections: Years 3 & 4, 5 & 6, Years 7 to 9, and 10 to 12. No entry fees are required. Entries can be a combined class effort and may be accompanied by original illustrations. Two entries can be submitted by a school. Prizes awarded in cash or kind to the school according to sponsorships obtained for an Environmental project. Certificates will be issued to classes for their entry with a copy of the cheque awarded to the school.2009 Theme (as a Teacher Note only) The theme for 2009 was To Save a Bushland Bird. Choose a bushland bird from a region that is threatened to write a poem or story about the bird, in what ways it is threatened and how it can be saved. Or, you might like to take a birdseye "view" writing from the birds' perspective. (refer to Schools Section) |
